Canva is a graphic design platform that allows you to create high-quality social media graphics, posters, documents, presentations, and other visual content. Canva allows you to pick and choose from a variety of professionally designed templates, and edit these designs through a drag and drop interface to make them your own.
Pain-Free Tip: It often helps to first do a rough sketch of your design before you begin. This will save you time in the long-run and will help you bring your vision to life before you begin creating it on Canva.
Ready? Let’s do this!
Selecting The Right Dimensions For Your Design
When you arrive at Canva.com, you can select the type of design you would like to use from the homepage. Each design you see here has already been set to the optimal dimensions for each graphic. Whether it’s a flyer, poster, or social media post, it’s ready to go. So, unless it’s absolutely necessary for you to do so, leave the dimensions as is. If, however, you do need to change the dimensions, you can make use of custom dimensions by searching for “custom size”.
Choosing A Background For Your Design
For the background of your design, you can choose either a picture, or a solid color.
a.) Using A Background Picture
If you want to use a picture as a background (e.g a patient smiling, one of your dentists, or your dental office), you will first need to add a grid. Here’s some information on how to use grids in Canva.
Next, you can “search images” on Canva itself or upload your own. Drag and drop your image onto the grid and it should “snap to fit” automatically. Once you have placed the picture onto a grid, they can be cropped, resized, flipped, and layered to create various creative visual effects. You can also add filters to your images to change the saturation, clarity, and brightness.
b.) Using Background Colors
If you decide to use a color for your background, you should always select one that represents your dental offices’ branding. You can make use of the Canva “color Picker tool” located in the toolbar at the top right corner of the editor.
If you do choose to use a background color, you also need to make sure that it does not clash with the color of your text. The viewer should not struggle to read what you are trying to communicate to them.
Adding Elements To Your Design
Once you have selected a background, it’s time to add text, icons, or illustrations. It’s important to start picturing the final result of your design as a whole at this point. You should try and combine elements in your design to be visually appealing.
Canva graphic designer Lynneal Santos says it’s a matter of balance. “Consider the balance and composition of all the elements in the design. When you’re laying out your elements, ask: are the elements balanced? Are they centered? And ensure they’re not too close to other elements or the edge of the page.” Her number one tip? “Keep it simple.” You should never overload your design with too many elements. This can make it look cluttered which may confuse patients.
Choosing The Right Fonts
The fonts you choose for your logo design and graphics can have a huge impact on the image of your brand. Take a look at this playful typeface below: Although it might work great for a fun media company, it would not be ideal for a Dental Office. If you have a dedicated font for your branding, you should try and keep it similar to ensure consistency. If you do not have a dedicated font yet, Canva has a wide variety of pre-set font combinations for you to choose from. You should, however, stick to using only two fonts per design. Using too many fonts will make your design less appealing and will eventually begin to look “messy”.
That’s about it! Canva has a variety of ways for you to play with a design until you are happy with it, so let your imagination run wild, but remember to keep your overall branding in mind when doing this. Remember, like most things in life, you will get better with practice. Don’t be disheartened if your first design doesn’t turn out perfectly. We can always help you out at our monthly meeting if you really get stuck, but we are sure you can do it. Before you know it you will be creating beautiful designs for your dental office to better engage with your patients.
